Lenovo is well-known as one of the brands targeting the entry level market in Indonesia with various Ideapad laptop series with prices below 5 million. Towards the end of 2017, Lenovo launched the Lenovo IdeaPad 320-14AST series laptop which is equipped with the AMD A4-9120 processor, the seventh generation AMD processor which for laptops under the price of 4 million is a luxury. Therefore in this article I will review this series of laptops. Does the presence of this seventh generation AMD processor make this laptop suitable for gaming? Or is it precisely to reduce the price below 4 million other features of this laptop to be of low quality? Please see the following review from me.

Hardware

One of the characteristics of the Lenovo Ideapad series laptops or even any Lenovo series is its elegant design with no other accessories besides the Lenovo logo and the laptop body that seems to be made of metal. But of course with that cheap price, the body of this laptop cannot possibly be made of metal, but like the previous ideapad series which is arguably the twin brother of this series, namely the Lenovo Ideapad 110-14AST, the body of this laptop is made of plastic.

This laptop has dimensions of 338.3 mm x 249.9 mm x 22.7 mm and weighs 2.1 kg which is relatively smaller but heavier than the cheap competitor ASUS X540SA which has dimensions of 348 x 242 x 25.3 mm and weighs 1.9 kg. Even though it is heavier, this laptop is still comfortable to carry around with its smaller size and weighs 2.1 kg. So for those of you who travel frequently, you don’t need to worry about the hassles when you need to bring this laptop on your trip. But you have to be careful in carrying this laptop because the body is made of plastic which makes this laptop less sturdy.

For connectivity issues, this is where the shortcomings of this series laptop appear. This laptop is not equipped with USB 3.1 type C or USB 3.0. This laptop only has 2 USB 2.0 ports which when compared to the latest laptops that are starting to be equipped with USB 3.1 type C. But fortunately this shortcoming is slightly covered by the presence of LAN and Bluetooth 4.1 ports which are actually rarely used by most people but this connectivity feature can be more value for those of you who need it. In addition, this laptop is also equipped with a card reader so for those of you who want to transfer photos or other files from digital cameras, cellphones or other devices, you just have to insert your device’s memory card into this laptop.

For connectivity with this laptop display device, it is equipped with HDMI and no longer uses VGA. This might be a drawback of this laptop if most of your devices still use VGA. However, this deficiency can be overcome by buying a VGA to HDMI converter. Also, current displays for the most part have started using HDMI so you don’t have to worry if you have to do a presentation with this laptop at your campus or office.

Other interesting features available on this laptop are the camera and DVD Drive which add to the added value of this laptop. Although the camera provided is only 2 MP in quality, this camera is sufficient for video calls according to its low price. After all, we rarely use laptop cameras with good quality. With the DVD Drive on this laptop, this laptop is suitable for employees or students who need to collect files on CD or DVD.

Screen

The screen on this series laptop measures 14 inches or a resolution of approximately 1366 x 768 so don’t expect to enjoy a full HD experience on this laptop. But you could say for a laptop with a price below 4 million, the quality of this laptop screen is enough for everyday use. This anti-glare HD LED display covered with a matte finish is suitable for use in brightly lit rooms or environments.

This is because with the matte coating, light reflections that occur on the screen when the laptop is used in bright light can be reduced. But indeed because of this matte coating too, the color quality on this laptop is a little darker when compared to other laptops with glossy screens. Overall the screen on this laptop is in accordance with the price and can be used comfortably for watching movies and other daily activities.

Performance

As I mentioned earlier, the interesting thing about this laptop is that the processor is equipped with a seventh generation processor, namely the AMD A4-9120 processor with a clock speed of 2.6 Hz. At first glance, this laptop looks tempting to be used for gaming, but unfortunately we have to be picky about the games that can be played on this laptop considering the quality of this laptop’s graphic card which is not designed for gaming.

The graphic card that is embedded in this laptop is AMD Radeon R3 Graphics which is a graphic card that is integrated with the AMD A4-9120 processor. This is quite understandable because by using a graphic card that is integrated with the processor the price of the laptop can be reduced, but the drawback is that the VRAM used for the graphics card uses the same RAM used by other processes. This of course makes us have to think twice if you want to use this laptop for heavy games or video editing.

In addition to the mediocre quality of this laptop graphics card, this laptop is only equipped with 1TB HDD storage media which is the standard storage media for laptops at a price of under 5 million. This of course makes this laptop lag behind high-end laptops equipped with SSD storage media. As we already know, SSD storage media has faster access speeds when compared to HDD. But for uses such as typing, watching movies or playing light games, HDD storage media is sufficient for your daily needs. Indeed, 1TB storage capacity is not a large capacity, but this capacity is in accordance with the price of this laptop which is targeted for middle to lower customers.

If this laptop is used to play games such as Grand Theft Auto 5 which is actually a heavy specification game, the frame rate obtained on this laptop is around 20fps with a very low setting. Meanwhile, if you use it to play the latest version of PES, maybe you will feel a little uncomfortable with the player’s movements, which are sometimes less responsive, but overall this soccer game can still be played on this laptop with very low settings. If you want to play games with RAM specifications of more than 4 GB, you need to buy an extra for this laptop because this laptop only has 4GB DDR4 RAM. But keep in mind that the maximum total RAM that can be added to this laptop is 8GB.

For battery life problems, this laptop has a standard battery life, which is between 4-5 hours for standard use. So you can say you need to always carry a charger if you want to travel with this laptop considering that the battery provided on this laptop is Polymer 2 cells with a power of 30 Wh.

Overall this entry-level laptop from Lenovo is perfect for those of you who only use a laptop for typing, watching movies, listening to music and others because of its good processor quality. But for those of you who want to use this laptop for gaming or video editing, it is advisable to think again because this laptop is not very suitable for heavy usage due to the lack of quality graphics card and storage media provided.
